"For two matched instruments"

with optional live electronics

This piece can be performed by any two identical acoustical instruments. (Performance on electronic instruments is not allowed, since the physical effort required for a performance is an integral part of the concept).

The piece can be freely transposed to any area of the instrumental ambitus. Two soprano recorders, would transpoze the piece at least two octaves up. Two bass-tubas at the other extreme, would end up playing the piece two octaves down.

The live-electronic part has to be set up as follows:

Instrument 1: Microphone (close miking is required)

-> preamp -> ringmodulator input 1

Instrument 2: idem

-> preamp -> ringmodulator input 2

The (mono) output of the ringmodulator should further be patched to the input of a sound processor, using a patch such as:

The panning should be set to center. The settings for the filter will be highly dependent on the instruments used for the performance. Thus, if two bass tubas are used, a high pass filter should be used such as to filter out all fundamentals and low differential tones. If two recorders are used, a low pass filter will be more appropriate.

Staging:

The two performers should be spaced about 4 meters apart from each other. However, they should face each other as well.

A version for 2 tubas will be published on CD on the Logos LPD label in 2002 or 2003. Soloist will be Leonaar De Graeve.
